What I think happened after Sarah died Sam went to war ...children are left with some family near where they lived 1865 Sam returns from war, buys property that adjoins John Penn, marries Penn's daughter Looks for husbands for his daughters Sends eldest Mary Alice to neighbor Taylors abt 1865 Next daughter Janie along with youngest daughter Celista to neighbor Keagles 1867 Gertude is still with him in 1870 at census time, she marries neighbor Hutzel fall of 1870 That leaves Frank. He must be the eldest and married by 1865 I doubt he and Sarah could have lived all that far from her parents since embalming didn't become affordable till after the war. Since it was Feb. it would have been cold enough to keep her body for a long ride but who knows. Chances are the kids lived with her folks till he came back and don't appear on the census since this all happened between 1860 and 1870. I doubt he would have left the kids behind when he brought Sarah's body and the baby's body back. If he already had his draft notice and was looking for someone to take the kids, the plans to return to her parents may have been made before she even died. He was drafted from Peede WI which means he may have already moved to Spring Grove. --Dori Coplien, March 2005 - - - - - Frank has been found The Barnhouse family lived next to Sam per the 1870 census. It would appear that all of Sam's children that married, married his neighbors in Spring Grove Twsp. --Dori Coplien, July 2006 |
