His real name was John G. Pinnow. He would never use the G. only A. We do not know the reason. He was a Veteran of World War I. He was gassed in this war and had trouble with his lungs ever since. This was taken from the Brodhead Independent Register, Sept 1, 1932. John A. Pinnow, a Corporal during the World War (I), last week received the medal of the order of the purple heart. The medal was awarded Mr. Pinnow for Valor at Argone. The order is one founded by General George Washington during the Revoluntion for exceptional military service. Mr. Pinnows service record reads: entered service July 10, 1917. Assigned to Co K, 129th Infantry, 33rd Division. Trained at Camp Logan, Houstan, Texas. Promoted from Private to Corporal. Sailed from Hoboken, May 16, 1918, on S.S. Agememnon. Landed at Brest, May 22nd. Received further training at Abbeville, France. Saw service in the Amiens Sector from July 26-August 20, 1918; in the Verdun Sector from Sept 6-26, 1918; took part in the Meuse-Argone offensive, from Set 26-Nov 11, 1918; and saw service in the Army of Occupation, from Dec 6, 1918-Apr 27, 1919. Sailed from Brest, May 18, 1919, on S.S. Leviathan. Discharged from Camp Grant, June 3rd, 1919. Corporal Pinnow immediatedly re-enlisted in Motor Transport Station. Discharged again June 3, 1920. He made most of the toys his grandchildren played by hand. A hobby horse, table, wooden blocks, etc. They were wonderful playthings and were used for years. In 1930 he purchased the Spring Brook Dairy in Brodhead from Arthur Pierce which he operated in the basement of the home that was occupied by Gilbert Swartz in 1956. In 1936 he sold the Dairy to Ronald Christman and for a number of years was employed in the Goldenrod Creamery, the Brodhead Hardware, and Fairbanks Morse, Beloit, until May 15, 1944 when he reopened the Wadhams Southside Service Station which had been idle for some time. The Station was formerly a Conoco unit operated by Leo M. Ties, taken over by Wadhams and back to Conoco again. In the fall of 1949, because of ill health, he sold the Station to Ray and Lyle Tim and started a Lawn Mower Sharpening Service at his home on Fourth Street. He also sold new power and hand mowers. In Sept 1950, he was granted a license to sell and service automobile insurance, starting his business with only one policy, his own. Since that time he has enlarged his agency to one of trhe largest in Brodhead. . In 1953 he became a licensed Fire and Casualty Insurance Underwriter and in 1954 following an extensive training course, he obtained his license to sell life insurance. In 1955 he added polio, health and accident, and hospital and surgical insurance. In 1956 he had almost a complete line of insurance including farm liability and residence liability. He was discharged from service with the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Victory Medal with four battle bars.
