Counting Kindred, page 125 (source 82), quotes John, ' 'On Sept. 28, 1828(as near as my memory tells) my father Peter Zerbe moved from Rehrersburgto Schuylkill County, but my father and his two oldest sons, Jacob andPeter, Jr., came over in 1826, to make improvements during summers and in1828 he brought his family to that place where he was preparing to move.In the evening of the aforesaid day, I saw two four horse teams stop atour house and unhitch. During the night they loaded furniture, thenstarted for Norwegian Township. The teams belonged to Jacob Zerbe, myfather's brother, and to John Zerbe, my father's cousin. We came to PineGrove by noon, fed the horses, started for the afternoon journey. It wasthree miles to Umbenhauer's tavern. Passed one house in seven miles tomy grandfather Zerbe's house, my mother's father, Jonathan Zerbe, and mygrandmother, Magdalena (Deppy) Zerbe. Myself and my smaller brothers,Martin and Henry, were left at grandfather's house, now EllsworthMinnig's hotel, in Tremont. The next morning our maid, Luda Lengel, brought us three little brothers four miles east into Norwegian Township, one house in this distance. We were destitute, saw no one for months, without schools or churches, no shoes and hardly enough clothing and avery poor house. Father worked hard and dislocated his shoulder-bonewhile making shingles in Painter's Swamp. Disabled, he waited a fewweeks, when he went to Berks County. His friends came and brought flour, potatoes, a plow and two horses (one horse was blind), some feed andharness. They cleared fifteen acres and planted oats, wheat, corn, ryeand potatoes.' ' |
