He homesteaded the place now owned by Gottfried Martin, just across the corner northeast from John Zabel. His other children born here are Robert, Louisa and another daughter who died when she was 19 years of age. from Old Settlers Tales, FF Crevecoeur - Kansas Book Collection - 1902 --- [V78T1109.FTW] Passed away at the home of his son, Robert, after an illness of three daysHe emigrated in the autumn or 1865 and after years of hard toil, he became the owner of a homestead. Their first dwelling place was a crude log cabin which may still be standing. However, modern luxuries and conveniences were unknown so all were contented. Immediately after his arrival in this country he became a member of the Lutheran Congregation which had been formed only a few months prior to his coming. The services at the time were held in the homes of the different members. He helped in the erection of the old stone church built in 1876, which is now used for school purposes at Duluth and has seen the membership increase from about 10 to 105. Alt. Born 1838Alt.
