Notes
![]() Note |
Enos Silas Ruff attended public schools and a term at Mount Pleasant Institute. About 1862 he bought a farm in Hempfield township about three miles southeast of Greensburg. This farm he lived on and improved until 1874 when he sold it and purchased the homestead, a farm of about 125 acres. He built a barn and had a herd of dairy cattle. He always had the most modern farm machinery in the area and kept up with improved methods of cultivation and animal husbandry. He was interested in good roads and organized a company consistingof his neighbors to buy a stone crusher to crush stone for the upkeep of roads and he bought a grader which he used and loaned to neighbors to take care of local roads. He and his family were members of the Presbyterian church ofwhich he was an officer. In the words of John Clyde Parker, ' 'I remember Uncle Enos. We visited his farm and in later years he visited Grandfather Parker and usually came to our house for a meal. At 62 years of age he fell froma ladder while picking cherries and broke an arm which became paralyzed. I remember as children we went out into the field in back of our house and picked a hand full of weeds and wild flowers and brought them in and Uncle Enoswould name each one, with the common name and the Latin name. He was alwayscheerful, an interesting speaker and good company.' ' |
