Note

John, II, was born in his father's home near the mouth of Sewickley
Creek, near West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA. He was educated in the
schools of WestNewton and at Reagantown. He assisted his mother in the
conduct of her store at Reagantown. In February, 1869, he and his
brother-in-law, James B. Smith, opened a store in Scottdale, then known
as Fountain Mills. In 1881 Mr. Smith withdrew and S. B. McMillen and
George C. Parker became members of the firm. In 1884, Mr. McMillen
retired and the firm was changed to J. S. Parker &Bro. and remained so
until 1896 when it was changed to J. S. Parker & Co. They began business
in a small way; first, in a building on the corner of Pittsburgh and
Chestnut streets, then at the corner of Pittsburgh and Spring streets
which location they occupied for years, the old building being enlarged
from time to time to accommodate the growing business. In 1903 the old
building was torn down and a new modern three story building was
erected. The two lower floors were occupied by the store and four modern
apartments made upthe top floor. Mr. Parker was an energetic and active
business man of Scottdale and took a deep interest in any new enterprise
that would aid the business of the town. He was a stockholder in the
Scottdale Iron and Steel Co. andwas interested in the Pipe Mill and
Machine Company. In 1901 he was one of the promoters, and became a
director of, the Scottdale Savings & Trust Co., and in 1905 was elected
President of that company. He built one of the first houses erected in
Scottdale. He was a member and director of the Presbyterianchurch and
remained active in business until death.
