Notes

Notes from Pat Parker: My grandmother loved me and my brothers very much. Ourdad was her only child since she and my grandfather did not meet until she was in her late 30's and granddad was seven years younger than she was. They married when she was 38 and had my dad when she was 39. Although she and my granddad visited us as frequently as possible or we visited them, first inHogsett, WV and then in Parkersburg, WV I have to admit I did not ' 'know' ' my grandmother. I was in high school when she died from complications of pneumonia after having suffered a fractured hip just before Christmas 1969 when sheand granddad came down to Pratt, WV where we lived. They had arrived early one very cold morning and there was ice on the ground. Granddad had asked herto wait while he came around the car to help her get out but she had not waited and slipped on the icy ground, fell, and fractured her hip. I only got to visit her once in the hospital, unfortunately she was under the influence of some type of medication which impaired her ability to speak clearly and even though she recognized me and reached out to me I could not understand her. I spent part of one summer (in 1960, I think) with her and granddad withoutmy brothers or parents along and it was the only time I ever remember seeingher and my granddad argue about anything; I don't recall what it was about but I know she was upset and begged me not to say anything about it to Mom andDad when I returned home. We went to Scottdale that summer to visit granddad's mom and some other relatives and it was the only time I remember seeing mygreat grandmother, Olive Etoil Anderson Parker and she died a couple of years later. Dad, C.D. Parker, recently related that grandmother used to be a bit of an athlete in her younger days having enjoyed the game of softball. Shealways seemed to enjoy watching me and my brothers play ball and swim when she had the opportunity to watch. |
