BIOGRAPHY: The Reverend Andrew and Mary Catherine (Schnabley) Hershey emigrated to America in 1719. He was a farmer and a Mennonite.Andrew Hersche with his father Hans and one brother Benjamin sailed for America in 1719. The brother, Christian, was obliged to stay in Germany where he served in some capacity at the Court of Freidensheim on the Rhine river, until 1739 when he joined his father and two brothers in Pennsylvania. The brothers had been given a land grant of 1000 acres by William Penn on the Little Conestoga in Pennsylvania. These three brothers were all chosen ministers of the Mennonite Church in Lancaster County,Pennsylvania. Records of all this can be found in German documents printed prior to 1834 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Also early records of the Rev. Andrew Hersche I, are proven by his will in the Records Office at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.THE HERSHEY FAMILY' 'Hershey.' ' comes from German ' 'Hirsch' ' (Deer) and means ' 'One who has some attribute of a deer' ' or One who lives at the sign of the deer.' ' (Such signs were used in olden times as we use street addresses. ) In ' 'The Hershey Family History' ', Scott Hershey reports that ' 'Twenty different spellings have been collected from tombstones, Bible and Court records' ' (p. 7). Those who have studied the family in Europe say that the first proven ancestor was Jog (Jacob) Hersche and that he was born about 1535 He lived at Appenzell, Switzerland. His wife is unknown.Although the dates seem suspicious, these experts say that Jog's son was Conrad, who married Greth Lamere in Appenzell in 1662. They had two sons. The younger son, Hans (John) married Ana Geunderin 1696. He may have come to America; two of his sons did. Andrew (1698-1754) married Maria Schnabele in Pennsylvania about 1725 and Christian married Barbara Bomberger in Pennsylvania about 1730Franziest's older son was Ira Hershey*s ancestor, Christian, the pioneer Hershey in Lancaster County. He had left Switzerland by 1682 and settled at Friedensheim in Germany. 'His wife was named Oade but her surname is unknown. They had four children. He had recently arrived in Pennsylvania when he and Hans Brubaker received a patent for 1,000 acres near Conestoga on September 17,1717. (Pennsylvania Archives; Series Two:19:622 ff. Warrantee Map, East Hempstead Township, Lancaster County; Original Patent A-5-271 Land Record Office, Harrisburg). Christian Hershey made his will on June 8, 1722. It was in German and therefor was not recorded, but the will and an inventory dated July 10, 1723 are in the Chester County Court House (Record Number 0146). He left 125 acres to his widow and to each of the three children then in America. The widow received the tract with the improvements and each child received twenty pounds in addition.' 'Ira L.
