In the possession of Dr. Andrew Timberman, Columbus, Ohio, a descendant of this family, is a small, leather-covered notebook which he found in the attic of the Butler County, Ohio, homestead after the death of his father. The entries begin: This book was maid in the year one thousent seven hundert an sixty three. This is to shoue from wheare ouer genearations came. Then follows a page of directions for making a wagon body, a wheel and shafts for a cart. On the fourth page: I am now 82 years and six months of age an then I sot all alone an tocken with to my macker the 7 day of June an a speret came to me in the even an told me to be carful. These entries were evidently made by Jacob Christopher. On page 7 it seems that his son Christopher made the entries. In the first pleace My Granfather of my father side Christopher Zimmerman was his neam, a minister of the Gosple he brought my father in to this Provence of pencelveny when he was 12 years old when he comto this provence aforesaid then there was no bilden in philedelphia but littel caves. Pages 15, 16 and 17: Directions for making clocks. Following pages contain directions for ' 'creadles,' ' ' 'Rocking Cheare,' ' ' 'vefer's Lum,' ' spinning wheel, wind mill, new sort of ' 'lum' ' for cloth, a chest-on-chest, and so on. In some way the writer omitted the birth of his so, Matthew, born Mar. 15, 1777, the ancestor of Dr. Timberman. Matthew m. Elizabeth Hershey whose family later became well known from the manufacture of chocolate. Matthew takes over the next entries with the names of his children and dates of their birth, still interspersed with the directions for making all sorts of things. ------------------------------------- Note from Nel: Although Katherine van Fossen believes that it was Jacob Christopher (husband of Sibella) who was 82 years and 6 months old, this contradicts his ' 'son's' ' entry on page 8 that his father was 78 yrs old when he died and died in 1759, four years before this notebook was begun. It would appear that entries may not have been made in sequence, since the births of the children, the first born in 1763 (the same year this notebook was apparently begun), are listed beginning on page 11. I believe there are two possibilities here. First, the 82 year old writer may be Jacob, husband of Catherine Earnhardt, who died in 1789 (see his will below). This would mean Jacob was born c1707 and not 1710 as many family trees show (including mine). A birth date of 1707 would not be out of line and is possible. Second, the 82 year old writer may be the father of the children listed, son of Jacob and Catherine, and grandson of Jacob and Sibella. Katherine also believes that Jacob Christopher and Sibella had only two sons: Arnold and Christopher (bn Mar 1, 1736). I have not seen the source for this specific birth date for Christopher, but believe that early researchers may have believed that Christopher Zimmerman who married Deborah Supplee was the son of Jacob Christopher and Sibella. There are those who currently have this Christopher listed as son of this Jacob, thus grandson of Jacob Christopher and Sibella. Katherine apparently also had not found Jacob and Catherine Earnhardt Zimmerman in the records to enable her to identify Jacob as a son of Jacob and Sibella. There is always the possibility that Jacob and Sibella did have a son, Christopher. And based on the births of the known children of Sibella, many large gaps are found. Sibella may have had difficulties bearing children or had several die as infants. So far no evidence, to my knowledge, has been discovered to verify the existence of any other sons for Sibella and Jacob Christopher except Jacob and Arnold, but this may simply mean records have not yet been foundor, if found, have been interpreted incorrectly. But Christopher who married Deborah Supplee appears not to be a son of Jacob and Sibella or one of the writers in this notebook, since the research on Christopher and Deborah shows no descendants matching the children listed in this notebook. Nor could Christopher be the son of this Jacob and Catherine as shown by the wills below. Jacob's will was written in 1786 (proven in 1789) and leaves 5 pds to his son, Christopher; yet Christopher who md Deborah Supple died in 1782 - four years before Jacob wrote his will. The notebook does not identify the writers and I cannot be positive that ' 'Christopher' ' is the father of the children listed in the notebook. I have no information at all on son Jacob nor do I have any solid documentation or proof on the families (as shown on my file) for sons Matthias or John. But if the data on John and Matthias is correct, it would leave only Jacob or Christopher as the father of the children listed in the notebook. ------------------------------------------------------ (Cover Page) Jacob Zimmerman's Will, 1789 Proved March 16, 1796 Witnesses Aff. (Signed) Jacob Zimmerman Witnesses: (Signed) Arnold Zimmerman, Christopher Zimmerman, Israel Jacobs ----------------------------------------------- >From ' 'Genealogical Landmarks and Milestones' ': Christopher's will proven 1782 (S 146). Executors were brother John and Christopher's wife, Deborah. >From Barbara Mihalcik: Christopher and Deborah are buried in Bethel Hill Cemetery. Will of Christopher Zimmerman was made 4/18/1782. Its purport was as follows: ' 'To wife, Deborah, the whole use and benefit of my estate, real and personal, until my 2nd son is 21.' ' She was to have the lower room of the house in the north end and the usual privileges, also one cow and one horse. The two eldest sons were to have the land, to be divided and each to have a due proportion of the meadow and woodland. The other children mentioned were Magdalena, Catherine, Susannah, Isaac, Jacob, and John and William, the latter being the youngest. These obtained their shares in money paid by thetwo older brothers. At that time there were but one set of farm buildings on the 214 acres. It appears that Christopher had a brother, John, who was appointed executor with the widow Deborah. The sick man either from weakness or illiteracy affixed his mark instead of signature to the will, which was witnessed by Henry Conard and Nathan Cox. The second son did not become of age until the fall of 1793. |
