Two Charged With Hate Crime Near Uw The Capital Times :: LOCAL/STATE :: 3A Friday, September 28, 2001 By Aaron Nathans and Steven Elbow The Capital Times Two men have been charged with a hate crime in the beating of two Asian men near the UW campus last month. The two Asian men said they were attacked without provocation as they walked together, speaking Chinese, in the 400 block of West Gilman Street on Aug. 31 shortly after 2 a.m., according to the criminal complaint. Two white men confronted them, shouting racial slurs against black and Asian people. One suspect punched one of the men; the other suspect then began punching the other man, police said. As one of the men tried to call the police on his cell phone, the suspects, who were with two women at the time, ran into a nearby security-locked building, according to police. That helped police locate the suspects, police said. They arrested Adam Coplien, 21, of Madison, and Carl Elam-Bishop, 21, of Camby, Ind., and charged them with substantial battery with intentional bodily harm as a party to the crime, one felony and one misdemeanor charge of a hate crime, and battery as a party to the crime. ---- BRODHEAD -- Adam James Coplien, age 23, of Brodhead, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 in Madison, WI.
