John served in the Civil War in company D 3rd Infantry Militia (enrolled Sep 12, 1862 and was discharged on Sep 25, 1862) and was a member of GAR Post #335. He and his wife were members of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, PA where he served as Sunday School superintendent 1868 - 1890 and elder for 35 years and on the building committee in 1886. They lived on Chestnut and River Streets in Sunbury (1850 and 1880) in a house that he built in 1868. He was a Mason (Past Master) and owned 4000 acres of woodland in Lycoming Co.. He worked as a fuller corder, coal merchant, blacksmith, clerk, railroad director, bank director, and president of the water company. He was also president of Sunbury Nail and Bar and Guide Iron Manufacturing Company at Sunbury, PA. He is buried at Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Northumberland County, PA. ' 'Haas Cousins' ' page 57 shows his death as 10 March 1889. |
